Italy is sending a hospital ship to Gaza to treat civilian casualties of the war between Israel and the Hamas militant group, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said Wednesday.
The logistics support ship Vulcano will remain off the coast of Gaza, officials said. The ship has a staff of about 170, including 30 medical personnel. Italy also plans to send a field hospital to treat the wounded, Mr. Crosetto said.
“Italy is doing its part and will continue to do so every day to help the population,” Mr. Crosetto said Wednesday on social media.
The number of dead and wounded from the fighting has risen dramatically since Hamas launched its Oct. 7 rampage into southern Israel and killed more than 1,400 people, mostly civilians.
Gazan health officials inside the Hamas-controlled enclave say more than 10,000 people have been killed in attacks by Israel Defense Forces, although those numbers haven’t been independently verified.
