Police in Syracuse, New York, arrested a man Sunday after authorities accused him of shooting three teenage girls who allegedly stole a car from the suspect’s family member.
Officers charged Michael Brown, 23, with attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment and weapons offenses for the triple shooting that injured all three girls, with one girl being severely wounded.
Police first became aware of the shooting shortly before 10:50 p.m. Sunday when a notification from ShotSpotter, a technological tool used by law enforcement, brought them to Syracuse’s Northside neighborhood.
Authorities said they were eventually waved down by three girls with gunshot wounds who were waiting by a Hyundai.
One of the 14-year-old girls had been shot in the leg, and another 14-year-old girl had been shot in the hip. A 16-year-old girl was shot in the arm and the midsection, and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Investigators said the three girls stole the Hyundai, and Mr. Brown went looking for it.
“Brown located the stolen vehicle with several juveniles inside,” police said. “At some point during the interaction, Brown shot into the car, striking three juveniles inside.”
The suspect initially fled the area after the shooting, but police were able to take him into custody a short time later.
Police did not say whether the girls would be charged over the stolen car.
