A baseball glove used by Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax in 1956, his second season in the majors, is going to auction next month.
The glove is being offered by Grey Flannel Auctions, and will go on the block on Dec. 10. Koufax used it while playing for the 1956 Brooklyn Dodgers, who had won their first World Series in 1955 and who would move to Los Angeles following the 1957 season.
As of the writing of this article, the current bid for the piece of Koufax memorabilia is $48,721.
The glove has 32 written on it, to the left of the wrist strap, while Koufax’s nickname “Koo Foo” is written on the back of the pinky finger sleeve, per the glove’s lot description. A dark spot on the glove’s palm is also pointed out in the description.
“An interesting feature of the glove is what appears to be a dark stain on the palm. Without doing an analysis of the area it’s possible the area is coated with pine tar,” third-party grading company PSA/DNA Authentication Services said in the description.
In 1956, Koufax played in 16 games, started 10, finished one, and had a cumulative 2-4 record as a pitcher, according to Baseball Reference.
The Dodgers returned to the World Series, where they lost to the New York Yankees in seven. The series remains notable due to Yankees pitcher Don Larsen’s perfect game thrown in Game 5, the only perfect game in World Series history.
