A sailor from New Jersey who had been missing for more than a week was found and reunited with his family this week, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The missing sailor, whom the Coast Guard did not name, had left Jersey City, New Jersey, for Bermuda before losing contact with his family on Nov. 6.

On Tuesday, he was declared overdue, prompting the Coast Guard to put out an alert as it began rescue efforts.

On Wednesday, the sailing vessel Time Bandit found another boat with tattered sails and a missing boom about 270 miles from Hatteras, North Carolina, the Coast Guard said in a statement about the rescue.

The missing sailor was aboard the boat and was rescued by a Coast Guard boat Wednesday before being reunited with his family in Cape May, New Jersey, on Thursday.

“We are pleased that this case resulted in a family reunion. The search area for this case was nearly twice the size of Texas and the seas are very unforgiving,” said Cmdr. Wes Geyer, Coast Guard Atlantic Area Search and Rescue mission coordinator, in the agency’s statement.
