ISLAMABAD — Pakistan fast bowling coach Morne Morkel has resigned with one month left on his six-month contract, the country’s cricket body said Monday.
Morkel joined the national team in June. The Pakistan Cricket Board didn’t give any reason why the former South African fast bowler quit.
The PCB said it will announce Morkel’s replacement “in due course.” Pakistan is scheduled to play a three-test series against Australia from Dec. 14-Jan 7.
Morkel’s first assignment was a two-test series in Sri Lanka, which Pakistan won 2-0. But the team had mixed results in white-ball cricket. After beating Afghanistan in a three-match ODI series played in Sri Lanka, Pakistan couldn’t qualify for the Asia Cup final.
Without injured fast bowler Naseem Shah, Pakistan’s fast bowlers at the Cricket World Cup struggled to provide the early breakthroughs with the new ball. The team finished fifth in the tournament, missing out on the semifinals.
