Read the fine print concerning the budget deal between President Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (“Pushback from all sides: Biden, McCarthy debt limit deal trashed by left and right,” web, May 28).

It continues the status quo. Our national deficit will continue to grow by trillions.

Despite billions in annual cost overruns, there is more money for defense. Nor are there significant cuts in domestic spending. There is nothing to preserve the future financial solvency of Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security. Spending restrictions over the next two years only commits to reducing the increase at a rate less than inflation. In essence, the deal kicks our financial crises down the road for the next president and Congress to deal with in 2025.

It fails to offset the almost doubling of our federal budget in recent years. The late Alabama Gov. George Wallace put it best when he said there wasn’t a “dime’s worth of difference” between the two major political parties. Both Republicans and Democrats continue to be addicted to spending what we don’t have at our expense, leaving future generations to pick up the tab.
