After review, the (ratings) call has been overturned.
Revised ratings from this year’s Super Bowl have been released and the event has now become the single most-watched U.S. network broadcast of all time, according to data from Nielsen. February’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles drew a staggering 115.1 million viewers across all platforms after a review of the data — which now includes more than 2 million than the initially reported number.
According to Fox Sports, Nielsen discovered that there had been “irregularities in the encoding that enables Nielsen’s measurement of TV viewing as well as in the measurement of out-of-home viewing.”
The previous record was set in 2015 when Super Bowl XLIX between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks drew 114.4 million viewers. Variety noted a caveat that out-of-home viewing ratings weren’t counted as part of the official number until 2021, with the publication adding that the out-of-home estimates for Super Bowl XLIX and Super Bowl LII would have helped surpass this year’s game if they had been counted with the initial rating.
The Chiefs won this year’s Super Bowl with a dramatic 38-35 win over the Eagles.
