At-home exercise bike company Peloton announced a recall of 2.16 million bikes Thursday because of problems with the bike’s adjustable seat posts, which can break and detach, causing injury.
The company has received 35 reports of the seat posts breaking and detaching, with 13 reports of injuries ranging from fractured wrists to lacerations and bruises.
The recalled bikes have the model number PL01, the original Peloton Bike. The recall does not affect the Bike+ and internationally sold Peloton Bike models.
The defective bikes which are manufactured in Taiwan, were sold to U.S. consumers at Peloton and Dick’s Sporting Goods stores and on their websites, as well as on Amazon, for around $1,400 from January 2018 to May 2023.
Peloton urges consumers to immediately stop using the recalled bikes and to contact the company for a free repair. The bikes will get a replacement seat post that can be self-installed. Details on how to order the free replacements have been sent to the primary subscription owner for all 2.16 million Peloton Bikes.
For more information, consumers can call Peloton at 866-679-9129 from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. EDT seven days a week.
