Aaron Rodgers may be one step closer to leaving the Green Bay Packers

The Packers granted the quarterback permission to speak with the New York Jets, according to multiple reports. Former ESPN host Trey Wingo reported that the two parties have talked and Rodgers is “open to the idea” of joining the Gang Green, while the NFL Network added that the sides were conducting “due diligence.”

ESPN reported that the Jets and Packers have also had talks about a trade involving Rodgers.

Rodgers has not announced what he intends to do next season, but his exit from Green Bay — whether that’s through a trade or retirement — has been heavily rumored. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst told reporters last week that backup Jordan Love is ready to be a full-time starter, adding “all options” were on the table for Rodgers.

The Jets have been the team most commonly linked to the 39-year-old throughout this offseason as New York hired former Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett to call plays.

New York had also explored adding quarterback Derek Carr, but Carr agreed to a four-year deal with the New Orleans Saints on Monday.
