A new report is giving Commanders fans hope.
Pro Football Talk reported late Thursday that a sale of the Washington Commanders is believed to be “imminent,” adding that owner Dan Snyder and co-CEO Tanya Snyder have cleared out their offices at the team’s headquarters in Ashburn.
The Snyders, the report said, left the facility in December in advance of the sale. Last year, Dan Snyder listed London as his primary residence when filling out a form overseas for one of his businesses.
“Within the building, the word being used regarding a potential sale is ’imminent,’” Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio wrote.
If Snyder reaches an agreement soon, the expectation is that the deal will be approved at the NFL owners’ meetings in late March — which has long been the target date for the sale to be completed. Any new owner would need to receive 24 votes from other owners.
Pro Football Talk’s report did not mention who will buy the team. Josh Harris, Tilman Fertitta and Jeff Bezos have been among the candidates linked to the Commanders. Fertitta has reportedly made an offer of slightly more than $5.5 billion, while Harris has toured the facility and recently partnered with Maryland-based billionaire Mitchell Rales. Bezos has reportedly been barred from submitting an offer, though the New York Post reported that he recently signed a confidentiality agreement — which could signal that he may be a suitor, after all.
A team spokesperson declined to comment.
The Commanders announced in November that the Snyder had hired an investment bank to explore “potential transactions” of the team, including a possible sale. The decision to explore the possibility came after a number of controversies involving Snyder and the Commanders’ work place.
Regardless, Thursday’s report led to a slew of tweets from Washington fans who were excited about the news:
