When Mark Zuckerberg renamed FacebookMeta” in 2021, a few people noted in passing that the word translates to “dead” in Hebrew. Nobody thought the name would be prophetic.

Since November, Mr. Zuckerberg’s Meta has fired 21,000 people — and now many of the company’s current and former employees are having second thoughts about this cruel twist of fate. Yet perhaps calling it fate lets Meta off the hook too easily. As Oscar Wilde once said, “As for omens, there is no such thing as an omen. Destiny does not send us heralds. She is too wise or too cruel for that.”
