NFL free agency has started and the Washington Commanders began by re-signing one of their own.
The Commanders reached an agreement to bring back cornerback Danny Johnson on a two-year deal, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed. The contract is reportedly worth up to $7 million and contains $2.75 million guaranteed.
Johnson has been a reliable veteran for Washington, which signed the undrafted free agent out of college in 2018. Though he had a rough training camp that resulted in him getting released last year, Johnson latched onto the team’s practice squad and eventually became a solid contributor throughout the season. He played 293 defensive snaps, most of which came in the final five weeks.
Johnson’s deal comes a day after the team reached a four-year, $90 million deal with star defensive tackle Daron Payne. Payne is expected to officially sign the deal Monday.
In five seasons, Johnson has played in 53 games with eight career starts. He had a career-high 29 tackles in 2022 and nine passes defensed in 11 games.
