Nearly half of U.S. voters say the federal indictment against Donald Trump for allegedly mishandling classified documents is politically motivated, but roughly the same percentage also say the former president should have been charged.

An ABC News/Ipsos poll released Sunday shows that 47% said the charges are politically motivated, compared to 37% who said they are not political and 16% who were unsure.

In addition, 48% said Mr. Trump should have been charged, while 35% said he should not have been charged and 17% were unsure.

Mr. Trump has denied any wrongdoing. He and his Republican allies on Capitol Hill characterize the 37-count indictment from a federal grand jury in South Florida as politically motivated.

A separate poll from CBS News/YouGov released Sunday found that 61% of voters said the indictment would not change their perception of Mr. Trump, 14% said it improves their opinion of him, 7% said it makes it worse and 18% were unsure.

The survey showed that Mr. Trump continues to dominate the increasingly crowded 2024 Republican presidential primary, with 61% support, followed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as his nearest competitor, with 23% support.

The ABC News/Ipsos poll was conducted June 9-10 among 910 people with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.

The CBS News/YouGov survey was conducted June 7-10 among 2,480 people and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.
