“It’s up to us, the responsibility is on us.”

If you’re cautiously watching and waiting to see how the latest developments in artificial intelligence play out, Dr. James Spencer, president of the D.L. Moody Center, recommends Christians take a more active role in becoming AI-literate.

“I think that AI can be a really powerful tool. You have to learn how to search and how to converse with artificial intelligence and if we don’t learn that skillset, I think AI will lead to more negative consequences instead of positive,” Dr. Spencer said in a recent interview with The Washington Times.

Dr. Spencer, who just authored the eBook “20 Questions: Christian Resistance, Technology and Artificial Intelligence,” also said he isn’t worried about AI developing a consciousness simply because that’s a relationship unique between God and His creation.

“Humanity has a unique covenantal relationship with God that God Himself has established. He has not established that with machines or robots that have a mimicked consciousness, He established that with human beings,” said Dr. Spencer. “We were the ones made in the image of God and we’re the ones who will always be reflecting His glory whether or not we’re in an environment where we have superior intelligence embedded in robots doesn’t matter. What matters is that we’re the only ones who will ever reflect the glory of God and participate with God in what He’s doing in redeeming the world.”
