Age should not be the determining factor in the election of a president (“As Biden ages, the public weighs in on ideal presidential age,” web, July 9).

People age differently. And as Americans are witnessing, President Biden is on a precipitous cognitive decline and aging poorly.

At times, Mr. Biden mumbles and is plainly incoherent. He can only handle “softball” questions from the press and depends upon a cheat sheet. But even with it he notoriously errs. Biden has also taken several public spills. Meanwhile, Sen. Bernie Sanders, the Vermont independent who is a year older than Mr. Biden, is as sharp as someone half his age.

At 72, then-President Donald Trump took a cognitive test, wanting to prove what we already knew: that he was mentally able to perform his duties.

Yet Mr. Biden refuses to take the same test.

The American people deserve a president who is both mentally and physically fit. Cognitive testing for all elected officials over the age of 70 should be mandatory.
