I agree that Republicans could do a better job representing the conservative community on green issues (“GOP must be ’engaging in the fight’ on environment,” Web, Jan. 16). But what divides the Republicans and Democrats is their respective approach to addressing the climate and environment.

Conservatives want to solve the problem through technological innovation. This approach embraces the synergy of science, free markets, and the free and independent choices made by consumers looking after their own best interests.

The political left’s approach is not at all innovative. It demands mass behavioral changes and obedience, necessitating a centralized government ruling by fiat, not choice. But that’s always been the nature of the left.

And look at the emerging results. Germany, the world’s strongest proponent of the brave green world, has concluded that the technology, infrastructure and availability of raw materials needed for a completely “clean” economy cannot be achieved in the foreseeable future. It is thus reopening sidelined nuclear, gas- and coal-fired power plants. California’s progress speaks for itself.
