Commanders sale expected between post-Super Bowl and owners’ meetings: report

The rumor mill regarding the sale of the Washington Commanders had been quiet of late, but it’s starting to pick up steam once again. 

Fox Business reported Wednesday that owner Dan Snyder is expected to sell the NFL  franchise in the weeks between the conclusion of Sunday’s Super Bowl and the league’s owners meetings that take place in late March. That matches a timeline that has been long reported as league insiders have said that the league hoped the process would be approved by the annual league meetings that are set for March 26-29 in Arizona. 

But the outlet, citing anonymous sources, also reported “most people in league circles” still believe that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos will make a bid after  the “initial bids are in.”

Bezos did not make an offer for the Commanders late last year when the team set a target for prospective buyers to submit an offer for the first wave of bids. That round, according to multiple reports, did not gain an offer that exceeded $6.3 billion — short of the rumored $7 billion that Snyder hopes to gain. 

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell did not offer much of an update Wednesday when asked about the status of a Commanders sale.

“The Commanders are under a process,” Goodell told reporters. “That’s their process. Ultimately, if they reach a conclusion and have someone joining the ownership group or buying the team, that’s something the ownership will look at.”

Goodell also said that there remains no timeline for Mary Jo White’s investigation into Dan Snyder to be completed.

The Commanders announced in November that Snyder had hired an investment bank to explore “potential transactions,” including a full sale of the franchise.
