The message this week from the European Union ambassador to the United States, Stavros Lambrinidis, is a clarion call to our national leadership (“EU’s top envoy says West must hold firm in fight for Ukraine,” Web, Feb. 20).

Ukraine, the EU, the U.S. and all democratic nations have spent the past year thwarting Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Ukraine is putting its people’s lives on the line while the rest are only sacrificing national treasure. Treasure can be restored. Once a life is gone, it is gone forever.

On Dec. 7, 1942, did FDR fold and let Japan and Germany roll over the rest of the world because he and the rest of the U.S. were getting tired of war after fighting for a year? If you know history, you know the answer.

Russia’s war against and in Ukraine is a clear and present danger to freedom-loving people around the world. It is more expensive to the U.S. than it needs to be because of the Biden administration’s woke prism of leadership.

President Biden needs to put his vision of reality into perspective. Climate change will have no bearing on anything if Russia proceeds unfettered. The inflation he caused has cost millions of dollars that could have been used to better support Ukraine with less detrimental effect on the U.S. In short, following a long-term “vision” at the expense of taking care of an obvious danger will only make victory impossible in both cases.

The world is once again at that proverbial crossroads of mostly bad choices. Mr. Biden and the U.S. need to choose the direction that best protects us all so that we can direct our attention to future problems later on.
