OPINION:
In “Abortion debate to dominate 2024 races with Republican Party doubling down on bans” (Web, Feb. 4), Susan Ferrechio details several failed GOP 2022 congressional campaigns and discusses the negative impact that poor positioning on the abortion issue may have had on them.
Until the GOP faces up to the more foundational problem with its abortion position, it will hit the same wall in 2024, 2026 and beyond. The fundamentals of the Republican position — not the public relations spin or lack of it — is the real problem with obtaining the votes of women swing voters who often make the difference between a GOP win and loss. The stance of many Republican leaders is at odds with the Republican stance on vaccination and guns, and it only takes about 30 seconds of dialogue with a woman swing voter to run into this hypocrisy.
Why can’t the GOP take a strong moral stance against abortion while compromising on abortion law? The Democrats have taken such an extreme position on late-term abortion that the GOP wouldn’t lose many votes if they decided that abortion is OK in certain cases. Many religious people and groups will have a problem with this, but who else are they going to vote for?
This is a fair compromise.
