A campaign ad released by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, who is running for mayor of Houston, called on voters to get out a vote — on the wrong day.
The Texas Democrat is running to replace Democratic Mayor Sylvester Turner in a runoff election. Her ad urges residents to make their way to the polls “on or before Dec. 7,” but the election is Dec. 9. The ad aired on Houston’s television markets, Mediaite confirmed.
In the ad, Ms. Jackson Lee discusses her time on the city council and in Congress.
“Houston, I’ve spent my entire career fighting for you. From fighting to keep our kids safe from guns when I was on the city council, to my days in Congress fighting to protect women’s reproductive freedom and for funding for our police, schools and small businesses,” she says in the video.
“Now, I’m running to be your mayor because if we’re gonna bring down crime, fix our streets, and bring good paying jobs here, then Houston needs a champion who’s ready to fight for what’s right. And I am,” she says.
The ad ends with the graphic telling viewers to vote on the wrong day.
Ms. Jackson Lee faces Democratic state Sen. John Whitmire in the mayoral race. Both the congresswoman and Mr. Whitmire made it to the runoff after the state’s general election on Nov. 7. The two beat out 14 others.
