Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Sunday that polls shouldn’t be taken at face value — especially when they show the Republican presidential candidate trailing his opponents.
Former President Donald Trump has “got 91 counts of indictment against him. The day before Super Tuesday, he’s going to start a criminal trial,” Mr. Christie said on the CBS Sunday program “Face the Nation.” “There’s a lot of things different about this and that’s why anybody tried to predict this is just shooting in the dark.”
Mr. Christie is polling at an average of just over 2% among recent polls, trailing entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy at just under 5%, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley at almost 10%, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis at 13.5%.
Mr. Trump leads the Real Clear Politics average of major polls, with a whopping 62%.
Mr. Christie has so far resisted suggestions that his mission to stop Mr. Trump from landing back in the White House would have more success if he and others dropped out to consolidate support around another candidate.
“If we listen to all the polling, Hillary Clinton would be in her second term. So I don’t believe that polling is nearly as reliable as it used to be, and I don’t believe that people tell the truth to pollsters,” Mr. Christie said.
“At the end of the day, everybody who’s trying to make these decisions now is just wrong,” he said.
