Federal prosecutors in Northern California said a grand jury has indicted an elderly San Francisco man on charges of striking and killing a world-class cyclist while drunk behind the wheel.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California said Arnold Kinman Low, 81, was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the April crash that claimed the life of 44-year-old Ethan Boyes.
Court documents allege that Mr. Low ran over the cyclist around 4 p.m. on April 4 while Boyes was riding in the Presidio.
Boyes died of his injuries a short time later. Prosecutors accused the driver of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
The cyclist was the reigning Masters Track World Champion for the 40-44 age group at the time of his death. Boyes had previously won 10 USA Cycling national championships in track cycling.
The defendant is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
If convicted, he could get up to eight years behind bars.
