What happens in Colorado apparently doesn’t stay in Colorado.

California’s lieutenant governor urged the secretary of state to look for a legal basis to keep former President Donald Trump off the state’s presidential-election ballots.

“I urge you to explore every legal option to remove former President Donald Trump from California’s 2024 presidential primary ballot,” Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis wrote in a letter to Secretary of State Shirley Weber released Wednesday.

“California must stand on the right side of history,” Ms. Kounalakis’ letter said. “The constitution is clear: you must be 35 years old and not be an insurrectionist” to be president.

The letter was released a day after the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Mr. Trump was ineligible to run for president in the state under the U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment because he participated in an “insurrection,” referring to the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riots.

Ms. Kounalakis said the president must be 35 years old, but only in her second draft.

In an earlier version of the letter, which was widely shared and ridiculed on social media, she wrote “you must be 40 years old and not be an insurrectionist” to be eligible.

Mr. Trump’s team immediately vowed Tuesday evening to appeal the Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court.
