Taulia Tagovailoa’s career as a Maryland Terrapin has come to an end.
Maryland coach Mike Locksley announced Tuesday that the senior quarterback will opt out of playing in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 30 against Auburn in Nashville, Tennessee.
“We certainly thank him and his family for all he’s given this program over the last four years,” Locksley said. “He handled it the right way. Great family, great people.”
The Ewa Beach, Hawaii, native leaves College Park having secured every significant single-season and career passing record in Maryland program history, including touchdowns, completions and yards. In his final game as a Terrapin on Nov. 25 against Rutgers, Tagovailoa became the Big Ten’s all-time career leader in passing yards. He finished with 11,256 yards after the win over the Scarlet Knights.
Tagovailoa has led the Terrapins to three straight bowl appearances after transferring from Alabama before the 2020 season. Tagovailoa’s brother, Tua, is the quarterback for the Miami Dolphins.
Maryland finishes its season in the Music City Bowl. Billy Edwards Jr. will start at quarterback for the Terrapins, but Locksley also said he expects to use fellow reserve QB Cameron Edge in the game. The Terrapins are also quarterback MJ Morris from the transfer portal from North Carolina State.
