I’ve always wondered what Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev meant when he said that the U.S. would be destroyed from within — without the Soviets having to fire a shot. Due to our relaxed law enforcement, poor choices in national priorities and many social distractions, I think I now know.

The Biden administration and progressive Democratic policies have created a golden opportunity for our foreign enemies. There are laws on the books to stop it, but they are not being enforced, so the DETERRENT Act mentioned in “Rogue nations infiltrate our colleges and universities” (web, Dec. 11) is an excellent start.

If the Senate joins the House in passing it, that will show we have the courage to reverse the transformation taking place — by limiting foreign investment in our educational institutions and strengthening restrictions against countries that do not share our values.

Even though we’re at the early stages of this invasion, it’s becoming clear which portions of our society are being targeted. Opening our borders to illegals — including the unimmunized — creates a serious health risk to Americans.

Our greatest resource and asset is our youth, who are being influenced by foreign groups to stop supporting American values. They include foreign businesses buying our farmland and trying to buy our electric utilities and other energy resources.

Inner-city residents are being forced to accept illegal immigrants with limited housing options. Then there are self-inflicted distractions, such as social-issues crimes and protests in which hateful rhetoric is used to create divisions.

We have to wake up and realize the clear and present danger of allowing all this outside influence and access to our resources. If the DETERRENT Act and existing laws are not enforced, the invasion will continue — all without our enemies having fired a shot.
