Former Rep. Liz Cheney says electing former President Donald Trump could mean the end of the republic and says the U.S. is “sleepwalking into dictatorship.”
“He’s told us what he will do. It’s very easy to see the steps that he will take,” she told CBS News’ John Dickerson.
Ms. Cheney has been outspoken about her dislike of Mr. Trump. She was one of nine House Republicans who voted to impeach him a week after the Jan.6, 2021 attack on the Capitol. She also served as vice chair on the House select committee that investigated the event.
She lost her election in Wyoming last year to Trump-endorsed Harriet Hageman.
“People who say ‘well, if he’s elected, it’s not that dangerous because we have all of these checks and balances’ don’t fully understand the extent to which the Republicans in Congress today have been co-opted,” Ms. Cheney said.
The former congresswoman, in a preview clip of her CBS Sunday Morning interview, was discussing her new book titled, “Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning.” In the book she addresses Jan. 6.
“One of the things we see today is sort of a sleepwalking into dictatorship in the United States,” she said.
