The things that Trump haters such as former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson say about Trump supporters remind me a lot of what was said years ago about the late Rush Limbaugh and his listeners.

Many on the political left (and some on the right) believed that Limbaugh had a Svengali-like hold over his listeners, simple-minded types prone to persuasion. Mr. Hutchinson has implied that supporters of Donald Trump simply follow the former president’s words without thinking for themselves.

He’s wrong. A lifelong Republican, I voted for Ted Cruz in the GOP primaries in 2016 but supported Mr. Trump against Hillary Clinton. (To be honest, I would have voted for Porky Pig over Mrs. Clinton, who is in my opinion one of the worst human beings ever to be involved in American politics.)

I voted for Mr. Trump in 2020, too, because he was willing to take on the establishment in Washington and put America first — two things that are anathema to someone like Mr. Hutchinson, an entrenched politician who would be very happy to continue with our gigantic, out-of-control federal government.

Mr. Hutchinson’s resume and experience are not what this country needs. Instead, we need people outside the swamp in Washington, people who will fight through the red tape, regulations and stupid laws that hinder our way of life.

And that is exactly what Mr. Trump does. Yes, I would like to see him tone down the rhetoric at times, but he is a fighter — and he is fighting to make America a better place for everyone.

By the way, I am tired of hearing about what Mr. Trump did or didn’t do on Jan. 6, 2021. Why don’t people like Mr. Hutchinson blame Rep. Nancy Pelosi for her inaction that day? She was the one responsible for the security of the Capitol, and she failed to do her job.
