ASHBURN — Washington Commanders safety Kam Curl will miss Sunday’s season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a thumb injury.
Curl’s absence is a notable one for the Commanders, as the 23-year-old is a versatile piece for the defense. Coach Ron Rivera said multiple players will be used to fill his spot, mentioning Darrick Forrest, Jeremy Reaves and rookie Percy Butler as options.
Rivera said he’s “pretty optimistic” that Curl’s injury will cause him to only miss one game.
“I’m not the doctor, we’ll have to wait and see,” Rivera said. “I feel pretty good about how he’s recovering, how’s healing up. I know he went and saw the doctor. I know things went pretty well, so we’ll see what happens.”
Curl suffered the injury in Washington’s second preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The former 2020 seventh-rounder told reporters earlier this week that he required surgery afterward.
“Right now, it’s just letting the incision heal,” Curl said. “Making sure I can go out there and play my game and do what I can do.”
Beyond Curl, the Commanders listed tight ends Logan Thomas (ACL) and Cole Turner (hamstring) as questionable.
