OPINION:
The 77th session of the U.N. General Assembly will taking place from September 13-26. Regrettably, although all 193 member states are represented in this unique forum, Taiwan is barred — despite being a beacon of democracy in Asia and a valuable partner that can help overcome the challenges now facing the world.
China’s increasing rhetorical and military intimidation, intensified by its recent military exercises around Taiwan, is endangering regional peace and stability. To deny participation in the U.N. to those who face live-fire exercises is a moral and material loss to the world.
Taiwan belongs only to the people living there. Neglecting this population is a gross violation of the U.N.’s universality of membership principles. It is the time for the U.N. to welcome Taiwan and, in fairness to the 23.5 million Taiwanese, give it the place it deserves in this international organization so that all countries can work together for the global good.
