The Washington Commanders signed veteran center Nick Martin on Tuesday after placing starter Chase Roullier on injured reserve.
The move comes after reports emerged that Roullier was feared to have suffered a season-ending knee injury in Sunday’s loss to the Detroit Lions. The center is reportedly waiting to get a second opinion on whether he needs surgery. But in the meantime, Washington added Martin — a six-year veteran who has started 62 games for the Houston Texans.
The 29-year-old spent last season with the Las Vegas Raiders, but he played only seven offensive snaps and started zero games. The former 2017 second-rounder was with the New Orleans Saints in the offseason but was eventually cut.
Rivera said Monday that interior lineman Wes Schweitzer would start in place of Roullier. But Schweitzer, who has played more guard than center, missed the Detroit game with a hamstring injury.
Against the Lions, the Commanders elevated veteran Wes Martin from the practice squad with Schweitzer out. Wes Martin played just one offensive snap, but he filled in at center after Roullier’s injury occurred with 1:08 left.
