The naming rights for the University of Maryland’s on-campus stadium are changing from one regional banking giant to another.
The university announced Friday that the stadium’s name will change from Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium to SECU Stadium as part of a campuswide sponsorship. The facility’s rebrand officially begins Oct. 1 when Maryland opens its home Big Ten schedule against Michigan State, meaning Saturday’s game versus SMU will still carry the Capital One name on the stadium.
The 10-year deal will net Maryland’s athletic department a guaranteed $11 million and also includes $2.5 million to fund the construction of a new practice facility for the Terrapins’ men’s and women’s basketball teams. That facility was officially announced earlier this year in conjunction with the hiring of new men’s basketball coach Kevin Willard.
SECU, pronounced “see-cue,” stands for the State Employees’ Credit Union of Maryland. Headquartered in Linthicum, Maryland, SECU is the state’s largest credit union. Capital One, based in Northern Virginia, agreed with Maryland to mutually terminate its naming rights agreement.
