OPINION:
The devil has gone back down to Georgia.
Now that Stacey Abrams — duly elected governor and forever America’s next president — has burst into spectacular flames, Democrats have turned all their devious attention to saving Sen. Raphael Warnock. But that does not mean defending Mr. Warnock’s record or lockstep alliance with President Biden and Democrats in Washington.
No. It means destroying the other guy. Whoever the other guy is. No matter what.
In this case, the “other guy” happens to be the University of Georgia running back Herschel Walker — Heisman Trophy winner, Hall of Famer and NFL star. In other words, Georgia royalty.
But never mind that. Democrats need warm bodies in the Senate in order to finish destroying the country.
Mr. Walker is not a politician and has never been one. But he is a conservative and has supported Republican candidates in Georgia. Worst of all, he is longtime friends with former President Donald Trump and supported him for president.
Also, Mr. Walker is pro-life.
All of this deeply offends the national political media who, for some reason, insist Mr. Walker must be a Democrat. For some reason, according to the political press, Mr. Walker is not allowed to be conservative and certainly not allowed to be a Republican. Just can’t quite put our finger on why that is.
Anyway, as offensive as Mr. Walker’s conservatism is to the press, it doesn’t really bother actual Georgia voters — the only people who actually matter in this particular election. Polls show Mr. Walker statistically tied with Mr. Warnock, the incumbent. If past polls are any indication, this means Mr. Walker could be ahead by as much as 17 points.
So, for Democrats, desperate times call for desperate tactics.
In a diabolical bid to smear Mr. Walker, Georgia Democrats have suddenly discovered their moral outrage over abortion. Though as a party they support abortion up to the moment of a baby’s first cries at birth, Democrats now accuse Mr. Walker of having paid for a woman’s abortion some years ago. Like they think that’s a bad thing.
But wait! I thought they said it was just a choice! Oh, never mind. Nothing says you care about children like exploiting dead babies to win political elections.
Mr. Walker denies the claim. And given Democrats’ political track record with the truth, he should be presumed innocent. Never forget that Democrats staged a group of “white supremacists” with tiki torches in Charlottesville at a campaign event for Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin in an effort to smear Republicans as racists.
These people really are beneath contempt.
But let’s assume for argument’s sake that Mr. Walker really did pay for an abortion. Should that disqualify him?
First of all, God has no choice but to rely on deeply flawed humans to get anything done on this earth. Otherwise, He would never get anything done around here. Christians know this in their bones because they have read the Old Testament.
In fact, a man’s flaws and mistakes often make him a better warrior for good. Those mistakes give him wisdom, discipline and compassion.
Another top priority for those who actually care about children as something more than a simple campaign tactic is forgiveness. True forgiveness is what makes life worth living. While forgiveness is a concept utterly foreign to Democrats, it is a concept familiar to most Georgia voters.
None of this has budged Mr. Walker off one of the central tenets of his campaign, which is to fight for the lives of the unborn that Mr. Warnock, Mr. Biden and their fellow Democrats have devoted their political careers to killing. Up to the very moment of a baby’s first cough in a delivery room.
Down in Georgia, Democrats’ vile tactics reveal very little about Herschel Walker and everything about themselves.
