ASHBURN — Commanders coach Ron Rivera missed Wednesday’s practice with a personal family matter concerning his mother, a team spokesperson said.
The official said Rivera was in California to visit her, but is expected to fly back to Virginia in the evening. Defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio ran practice in Rivera’s place and will speak to reporters following the session.
This isn’t the first time Del Rio, a two-time head coach, has filled in for Rivera. The coordinator previously stepped in on occasion during the 2020 season when Rivera was undergoing treatment for cancer. Rivera missed a few practices, though coached every game.
The Commanders are preparing to face the Indianapolis Colts this weekend.
