OPINION:
In “No such thing as a ‘Christian Democrat’” (Web, Oct. 30) Everett Piper, a former university president, writes that “today’s Democratic party is no longer a party that any thoughtful Christian, whether they be Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, evangelical or mainline Protestant, can support.” He’s right.
Piper notes that in addition to elevating on-demand abortion above all else, the party endorses the righteousness of castrating boys and sexually mutilating young girls. Moreover, it insists that books for teenagers, like Maia Kobabe’s “Gender Queer: A Memoir,” are some of the best literature available on “diversity, equity, and inclusion.”
In a democratic republic, which is designed to foster cooperation among competing values, how can those of us who agree with Piper’s assessment reach across the aisle in the spirit of compromise? Is it even possible? History informs us that at times it is not. Approximately 3,000 years ago, King Solomon, when confronted with two women who both claimed to be the mother of one baby, announced that the baby should be cut in two. This revealed the real mother. In 1517, Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, to protest the profitable system of indulgences by the Catholic church. When ordered by the authorities to recant, he famously stated, “Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God. Amen.” The Lutheran Church flourished from that point on.
We have reached the point at which the aisle has become a yawning abyss, impossible to cross. We cannot indulge the president and his party as they attempt to totally transform our country by abandoning our biblically based values. Enough is enough.
