Actor Matthew McConaughey has his eyes on his next role: Washington Commanders minority owner
McConaughey is interested in joining an ownership group to buy the Commanders from owner Dan Snyder, according to multiple reports. The Texas native, who is nevertheless among Washington’s most famous fans, is reportedly set to team up with a bid by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and hip-hop artist Jay Z.
“Matthew has always been a huge fan and his ties with the team go way back,” a source told the New York Post, which first reported McConaughey’s interest. “They support his foundation and he’s good pals with Dan Snyder — he and [supermodel wife Camilla Alves] were on Dan’s yacht over the Super Bowl last year.”
McConaughey spoke at the team’s welcome home luncheon in 2019, detailing his love for the franchise. He said he became a fan because when he was 4 years old, his favorite food was a hamburger. And with Washington having linebacker Chris Hanburger on the roster — well, it was a perfect fit.
“When you’re four years old, those are the things that make sense to you,” McConaughey said.
McConaughey also has a history of investing in sports. He is a co-owner of the Major League Soccer team Austin FC.
The 2014 Academy Award winner also isn’t the only celebrity who is interested in owning a piece of the Commanders. NBA star Kevin Durant told ESPN that he would love to be part of a group, even mentioning Bezos’ bid.
The Commanders said last week that the Snyders have hired an investment bank to explore “potential transactions,” including the sale of the franchise. “We are exploring all options,” a team spokesperson said.
The franchise is expected to sell for $7 billion, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reported Sunday. Multiple reports indicated there is hope the sale could be finalized by the NFL’s spring meetings in March.
