The Washington Commanders will start quarterback Taylor Heinicke this weekend against the Houston Texans with Carson Wentz still working his way back from injury, coach Ron Rivera said.

Rivera said Wentz, who suffered a fractured finger last month in a win over the Chicago Bears, has been medically cleared to start throwing. But the Commanders have yet to designate Wentz to return to practice.

Though Heinicke will start against the Texans, Rivera said that he has not yet decided who will be the team’s starter beyond this week.

Heinicke has led Washington to a 3-1 record in Wentz’s absence. Wentz, Washington’s big offseason acquisition, went 2-4 over the team’s first six games.

Heinicke threw for 211 yards and an interception in Monday’s 32-21 upset win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
