A baseball glove worn by Babe Ruth while he played with the New York Yankees sold for over $1.5 million at an auction Saturday.

The $1,527,000 paid for the Sultan of Swat’s glove is the most ever paid for a glove, according to Hunt Auctions. The previous record was believed to be $387,500 for a Lou Gehrig glove sold in 1999.

“This monumental glove is truly [one] of the most historic pieces of its medium to have ever been offered at public auction,” said David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions.

The auction was held at the 19th annual Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory in Kentucky.

Hunt Auctions said Ruth wore the glove during the 1927 season with a Yankees team that is considered the best in MLB history. Ruth then donated the glove to St. Louis Browns infielder Jimmy Austin, and it remained in Austin’s family until now.
