Nationals relief pitcher Sean Doolittle won’t be back until at least late June after being moved to the 60-day injured list on Wednesday.
Nationals manager Dave Martinez announced that Doolittle, who was previously on the 10-day IL with an elbow sprain, received a platelet-rich plasma injection last week that will keep him on the shelf for at least six more weeks.
“He opted to do that, get it over with, get it done right away,” Martinez said Wednesday, per MASN. “Now he’s just going to rehab. He said he feels really good, which is great. We’re just going to rehab him and get him back.”
Doolittle was one of the Nationals’ top relievers early in the season. The 35-year-old fan favorite strung together six straight scoreless outings and allowed only one batter to reach base in 5 1/3 innings before getting injured.
His presence as a left-hander is missed, as long reliever Josh Rogers is the only left-hander in Washington’s bullpen.
In other injury news, starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez, who made the starting rotation out of spring training but injured his neck before opening day, was also moved to the 60-day IL. He hasn’t begun throwing yet.
