Pentagon spokesman John Kirby is joining the White House communications team.
Mr. Kirby, a retired U.S. Navy rear admiral, is expected to run strategic communications for the National Security Council, according to The Associated Press, as the administration navigates a flood of foreign policy challenges.
President Biden’s NSC has not previously had a dedicated strategic communications role.
The move was first reported by The Washington Post.
Mr. Kirby was rumored to have been in contention for the White House press secretary role amid former spokeswoman Jen Psaki’s recent departure.
Karine Jean-Pierre replaced Ms. Psaki and delivered her first press briefing as the White House press secretary earlier this week.
