Brandon Scherff is officially leaving the Washington Commanders.

Scherff reportedly plans to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars, agreeing to terms Monday hours after the NFL’s legal tampering window opened. After playing under the franchise tag for two straight seasons in Washington, Scherff now heads to Jacksonville where he’ll have to protect quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Scherff’s exit from the Commanders was years in the making as the two sides could not come to terms on a long-term deal. General manager Martin Mayhew foreshadowed the relationship would come to an end he told reporters that fans should know the team offered to make Scherff the highest-paid guard in the league — a statement that Mayhew later admitted he regretted.

The Jaguars, meanwhile, desperately needed help along the offensive line. Lawrence, the first overall pick in 2021, was sacked 32 times his rookie year, while Pro Football Focus ranked the unit 24th among offensive lines.

Scherff comes with an established track record. The fifth overall pick in the 2015 draft, Scherff became Washington’s first All-Pro since 1996 in 2020 and made the Pro Bowl five times in seven seasons. Despite his on-field success, Scherff has struggled with injuries — playing only every game in a season twice. The 30-year-old missed six games last season, but still performed at a high level when available.

Terms of Scherff’s contract weren’t immediately available. ESPN first reported the deal.
