It took Maurice “Mo” Creek five days, but he’s “finally” out of Ukraine.
The Oxon Hill, Maryland, native was playing basketball professionally in Ukraine when Russia invaded the country on Thursday. Creek, who played in college at Indiana and George Washington, tweeted early Tuesday morning that he was out of Ukraine after a 12-hour car ride.
“TOOK ME 12 HOURS BUT FINALLY OUT OF UKRAINE…NEXT STOP BACK TO ROMANIA,” he tweeted.
The 31-year-old has been detailing his experience on social media, at one point tweeting that he “never felt so hopeless in my life” after his trip out of Ukraine was delayed on Saturday due to air raid sirens.
Creek, who started playing professionally in Ukraine in 2019, was a member of MBC Mykolaiv in the Ukrainian Basketball SuperLeague. He said he was staying in a bomb shelter in the basement of his apartment complex.
“I’ve been hearing the bombs at night, the shooting at night, and it’s terrifying for me to hear that,” Creek said Sunday on Fox News. “My family is on the phone, worried sick. My coaching staff with me right now is worried sick. I’m worried. It’s just bad right now.”
Creek played for the Hoosiers for three seasons before transferring to George Washington for the 2013-14 season. He led the Colonials in scoring that year with 14.1 points per game.
