Charlotte Hornets forward Montrezl Harrell is facing a felony drug charge and up to five years in prison after being arrested in Kentucky last month.
Harrell, who played for the Wizards during the first half of the 2021-22 season, was charged with trafficking less than five pounds of marijuana — a felony in Kentucky, one of the 31 states in which the drug is not legalized for recreational use.
Police said they found three pounds of marijuana in bags in the backseat of Harrell’s rental car during a traffic stop in Richmond, Kentucky, on May 12. Police said Harrell, 28, was pulled over for following another vehicle too closely.
According to court records obtained by the Charlotte Observer, a Kentucky state trooper says he smelled marijuana in the vehicle and that Harrell “admitted to being in possession of marijuana and produced a small amount from his sweatpants”
Possessing or trafficking between eight ounces and five pounds of marijuana is a Class D Felony in Kentucky and is punishable by 1-5 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine. Harrell’s arraignment is scheduled for July 13.
Harrell, who is a free agent this offseason, played college basketball at Louisville. The forward and former Sixth Man of the Year was traded by Washington to Charlotte at the trade deadline in February.
