OPINION:
The headline from The Hill was eye-catching: “Buttigieg edges out Biden among Democrats in New Hampshire poll.”
That’s like saying Tweedledee edges out Tweedledum. Looking through the glass, what’s the difference?
President Joe Biden’s polls have sunk; so, too, his hopes for a second White House term. After a year and a half of destroying the economy that Donald Trump built, hiking inflation to levels not seen in 40 years, and then turning to political panderers to help redefine what inflation is anyway — it all depends what the meaning of the word is is, guys! — Biden has about as much chance of winning another presidency as a Latinx (another new word, courtesy of Democrats) has at being invited to Jill Biden’s home for some home-cooked breakfast tacos.
Enter the whispers of Hillary Clinton.
Enter the Democrats’ attempt to find somebody this side of the grave. Gavin Newsom? The California governor is a talked-about possibility — but his taste for tyranny that marked his coronavirus chaos and led to such dictates as telling church-goers to quit singing may have sold well enough with his constituents to win him another election, squeaked by as it was at the recall polls. But it’s doubtful he can march forward with that same oppression madness on a national scale and win a White House.
So here comes Pete Buttigieg.
In the minds of Democrat movers and shakers, Pete’s smart, Pete’s good looking, Pete’s well spoken and most of all, Pete’s gay.
In fact, it’s that last that draws the most oohs and ahhhs from the Democrats — but if they think running on gay is a winner of a campaign plan, then they ought to think again.
Buttigieg’s a mess of a Transportation secretary. And by many accounts, he was a mess of a South Bend mayor, too.
The pickings for Dems are slim.
There’s brain dead Biden. There’s big gay Buttigieg.
There’s Tweedledum. There’s Tweedledee. The difference is negligible. To paraphrase, as Hillary herself once said in congressional testimony: What difference, at this point, does it really make? And the answer is none. The Democrats really have nobody to offer in 2024.
