Twitter sued Elon Musk on Tuesday over his effort to drop his planned acquisition of the platform, teeing up a major legal battle between the Tesla and SpaceX founder and the social-media company that wants him to follow through on the deal.
“Twitter has filed a lawsuit in the Delaware Court of Chancery to hold Elon Musk accountable to his contractual obligations,” Twitter board chairman Bret Taylor said in a post on the platform.
The lawsuit was an anticipated escalation in the ongoing feud between Mr. Musk and Twitter.
Twitter’s lawyers said Mr. Musk’s effort to end the deal was “invalid and wrongful” and hinted in paperwork filed Monday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission at taking action to enforce the agreement’s terms.
Mr. Musk has signaled that he is itching for a legal battle.
He published a meme on Twitter on Monday featuring himself laughing alongside a caption saying Twitter would need to “disclose bot info in court” if it pursued legal action.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO has cited determining precisely how many Twitter accounts are fake or spam versus real people as a sticking point in his planned takeover of the platform.
