OPINION:
During President Biden’s inauguration speech last January he promised to unite the country. He said, “We can join forces, stop the shouting and lower the temperature. For without unity there is no peace, only bitterness and fury.” Yet on Tuesday he flew down to Georgia and gave a dishonest demagogue’s speech, trying to sell to the American people his radical federal takeover of our elections.
In an angry tone the president compared all those opposed to his bill to Jefferson Davis, Bull Connor and George Wallace. The first was the South’s Civil War president, and the next two, racist Alabama Democratic state politicians who opposed the Civil Rights movement. Biden stoked anger and fear by claiming, “I believe that the threat to our democracy is so grave that we must find a way to pass these voting rights bills, debate them vote and let the majority prevail.” He even threatened to blow up the filibuster in the Senate to get his way.
Biden continues to use divisive rhetoric and lies to compare the new Georgia election laws to “Jim Crow 2.0.” But his new election proposal amounts to a Democratic power grab that would get rid of voter-ID laws and weaken election integrity. His law, if passed, would take control of our national elections from each state and give them the federal government.
Furthermore, the president’s home state of Delaware has much more restrictive voting laws than Georgia. So why didn’t Biden go to Delaware on Tuesday to complain about the voter suppression happening in his own state? Mr. President, I stand with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and against you. Your divisive rhetoric is a disgrace and must be rejected.
