Tom Brady is officially retiring from the NFL, the star quarterback announced Tuesday morning.

In 20 seasons with the New England Patriots and two with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Brady went to 10 Super Bowls, hoisted seven Lombardi Trophies and won three regular-season MVP awards. He ends his illustrious career as the NFL leader in career touchdown passes (624) and career passing yards (84,520).

ESPN originally reported his retirement Saturday, but Brady and Tampa Bay denied the report, saying the quarterback wasn’t close to making the decision. But Tuesday morning, Brady wrote a long post on his Instagram page about his decision to walk away.

“I have always believed the sport of football is an ’all-in’ proposition — if a 100% competitive commitment isn’t there, you won’t succeed, and success is what I love so much about our game,” Brady wrote.

“This is difficult for me to write, but here it goes: I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore. I have loved my NFL career, and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention.”
