OPINION:
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2015 that same-sex marriage was essentially the law of the land. Congress just this week passed a bill for President Joe Biden to sign that essentially makes same-sex marriage — again — the law of the land. They call it the Respect for Marriage Act. They call it a step forward for civil rights and social justice for all. They call it a great win for the LGBTQ community and a great win for tolerance and humanity.
They can call it whatever they want. God in the Bible still calls homosexuality a sin.
And that’s what it remains.
“Just as I began my career fighting for the LGBTQ communities, I am overjoyed that one of the final bills I will sign as speaker will be the Respect for Marriage Act, ensuring the federal government will never again stand in the way of marrying the person you love,” outgoing Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote in an op-ed in The Washington Post, expressing how “overjoyed” she was at the House, led by Democrats but including the signatures of 12 Republicans, pushed forward this bill to become law. She ought not be so “overjoyed.” Neither should the 61 in the Senate who passed this same bill a week ago. The proper emotion should be horror mixed with fear.
God will not be mocked.
Yet politicians, members of the court, activists for the LGBTQ cause and even members of certain churches, including the leadership, have been watering down the words of the Bible to fit the mold of modern-day desires to the point where homosexuality has been nationally rubber-stamped as an acceptable godly practice. Some even argue that humans are born gay — selected by God to be gay — and that the biblical passages about homosexuality as sin, as an abomination, as a rebellion are old, outdated, inapplicable in today’s society and that love is love and Jesus is love, so as long as love is involved, then no harm, no foul, no sin, nothing to forgive, nothing for which to seek forgiveness.
“For millions of Americans,” Biden said, after the Senate passed this bill days ago, “this legislation will safeguard the rights and protections to which LGBTQI+ and interracial couples and their children are entitled.”
No. Not even close.
A nation that mocks God filled with people who thumb their noses at God’s laws is a nation that has wearied God and is therefore on a fast track to failure.
The foundation of a country is the family.
This is why the left — the Democrats, the Marxists, the communists and socialists and collectivists and the like — always turn against traditional family, traditional values, and most importantly, godly and virtuous family values. Tear down the family; tear down society; tear up societal laws and order; tear open the door for government to come in and rule: it’s the playbook of leftists.
That American family values based on biblical truths have been under attack for decades now is really no surprise. That American family values based on biblical truths have been so rapidly and deeply destroyed in just a few short years — under the White House watch of Barack Obama and now, Joe Biden — is a bit of a breath-taker. After all, it does seem rather sudden how much gain the LGBTQ community has made in just recent months, yes? Drag queen shows for children; sex change surgery for teens; the open sexual grooming of our youngest and most innocent; in short, the total normalization of what used to be widely accepted — properly so — as psychological and behavioral problems.
It’s no imagination such evil is coming on fast and furious.
It’s actually what happens when a nation mocks God.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015 that states must issue marriage licenses to same-sex individuals and that all states must recognize the validity of marriage licenses issued to same-sex couples in other states. Some fought; some opposed. But many more then and over the course of time accepted the idea of gay marriage in America — accepted the court’s definition of marriage — accepted that times had changed and in order to keep in line with the times, the state governments had to recognize the rights of same-sex couples to marry.
God’s definition of marriage didn’t change, though.
Just because SCOTUS gave Americans permission to pursue same-sex marriage doesn’t mean God fell in line. Just because 258 members of the House, including 39 Republicans, in the House just said same-sex couples can marry doesn’t mean God said, okey-dokey, fine and dandy.
God is the one who created male and female both in His image, who established the standards of behavior for males and females and defined their unions — defined marriage and family, defined sin, defined punishments and consequences for sin.
And as Romans 1:24 makes clear about those who continue in sin, despite warnings: “Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie … For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. Their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural, and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in their own persons the due penalty for their error.”
The LGBTQ community may rage all it wants for acceptance, tolerance, the silencing of uncomfortable truths, and so forth. And that may work to some degree in the material world. That may move politicians to act and fearful churches to grow silent and Bible-thumpers to take their Bible-thumping somewhere else. But it won’t change God.
It won’t change God’s words.
Sin is sin today same as sin was sin yesterday, same as sin will be sin tomorrow — no matter what courts and Congress say.
And that means America needs to be very afraid right now. If God won’t be mocked, and if God won’t tolerate sin, and if God is in control of the nations and the peoples, and raising up those he favors while allowing consequences for sin to hit at those who’ve turned backs to biblical teachings — well then, between Obergefell and the ridiculously named “Respect for Marriage Act,” this nation’s on a path of peril.
Rather than cheer, we ought to fear. Fear — then fall on knees and confess, repent and pray.
Sodom. Gomorrah. Rome. Social decay combined with cultural decay combined with moral decay.
America is not so special to be exempt from their fates.
