Elon Musk said Tuesday evening that he will abide by the results of his weekend poll and resign as head of Twitter.

In a post on the site that he bought for $44 billion earlier this year, the tech tycoon said he would remain at the company though.

“I will resign as CEO as soon as I find someone foolish enough to take the job! After that, I will just run the software & servers teams,” he wrote.

Mr. Musk’s post came in the form of a reply to the unusual poll that he set up Sunday night.

“Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll,” he wrote then.

After the scheduled 12-hour running time, more than 17 1/2 million Twitter users stated that they wanted Mr. Musk to resign as CEO — by a margin of 57.5% to 42.5%.

In his brief time as Twitter CEO, Mr. Musk has frequently taken polls of users on such matters as the value and price of “blue checks” and how long to suspend some journalists who had “doxxed” him.

Slightly earlier Sunday evening, Mr. Musk had effectively acknowledged that his time running the social-media giant has been stormy, claiming that “Going forward, there will be a vote for major policy changes. My apologies. Won’t happen again.”
