Elon Musk publicly offered to step down as the Twitterer-in-chief on Sunday night.
The Tesla/SpaceX tycoon put up a poll at 6:20 p.m. EDT asking Twitter users “should I step down as head of Twitter?”
The mercurial Mr. Musk said he wasn’t asking just for the jollies.
“I will abide by the results of this poll,” he wrote.

After about 45 minutes, the Twitter users wanting Mr. Musk to resign as CEO (he wasn’t explicit about whether that’d mean selling off his ownership stake) were ahead — by a margin of 57.5% to 42.5%
In that first 45 minutes about 3 million people voted in the poll, which was designed to run for 12 hours.
In his brief time as Twitter owner and CEO, Mr. Musk has frequently taken polls of users on such matters as the value and price of “blue checks” and how long to suspend some journalists who had “doxxed” him.
Slightly earlier in the evening, Mr. Musk effectively acknowledged that his time running ths social-media giant has been stormy, claiming that “Going forward, there will be a vote for major policy changes. My apologies. Won’t happen again.”
