Chase Young was placed on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list Tuesday, meaning the Washington Commander will miss at least the first four games of the season.
Commanders coach Ron Rivera had previously said Young would miss at least the opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars as the 23-year-old is still recovering from a torn ACL. But by moving Young to the regular season PUP list, NFL rules state Young will have to miss a minimum of four weeks. The earliest Young would be eligible to return is Week 5 (Oct. 9) against the Tennessee Titans.
Young’s placement on the list was one of a series of transactions the Commanders made before Tuesday’s practice in order to get their roster down to 80 players. Washington also placed center Tyler Larsen (Achilles) on Reserve/PUP, placed linebacker Nathan Gerry on injured reserve and cut wide receiver Kelvin Harmon and tackle Rashod Hill.
The Commanders opened camp with four players on the PUP list, with Young, Larsen, Chase Roullier (leg) and Logan Thoams (ACL). Roullier and Thomas have since been activated off the list. Thomas and Young both tore their ACLs, but Young’s injury was considered more severe as surgeon Dr. James Andrew had to graft the patellar tendon from his left knee to his right (the knee with the torn ACL).
With Young out, Washington has relied on James Smith-Williams and Casey Toohill to play opposite of edge rusher Montez Sweat.
